SlowMist Warns About Rise in Phishing Attacks on TON Ecosystem

A blockchain security expert has sounded a note of warning about the rise in phishing attacks within the Open Network (TON) ecosystem. Blockchain security company SlowMist founder said phishing attackers continue to target the blockchain as it continues to record massive growth this year.

The TON ecosystem features several decentralized applications (DApps) and tokens. “There are more and more phishing activities in the TON ecosystem,” said SlowMist founder Yu Xian via X on June 23.

Xian noted that scammers having easy access to message groups to post phishing links gives the phishing vulnerabilities a ground. “The Telegram ecosystem is too free, and many phishing links — or bot forms — are spread through message groups, airdrops and other deceptive methods to lure away users’ TON wallets in batches,” said Xian.

Furthermore, he said the use of anonymous numbers to create Telegram accounts without any ties to SIM cards makes phishing risks higher. “If these are phished away, it means that the corresponding Telegram account may also be lost, unless the user has enabled an independent password, or two-step verification,” said the security professional.

Telegram introduced “anonymous numbers” option two years ago, so users can log in without using a SIM card. They can use blockchain-based anonymous numbers available on platforms like Fragment to log in instead of depending on a SIM card.

The TON ecosystem has recorded significant growth this year, with projects based on the platform including its native crypto Toncoin (TON) and the play-to-earn token Notcoin (NOT) making it popular among Telegram users.
