Ethereum Developers Push for Speedier Upgrades Amid Growing Demand
During a meeting of Ethereum core developers on February 13, participants expressed a strong desire to accelerate the frequency of future Ethereum protocol upgrades. The session included over 25 stakeholders, among them Tim Beiko, a researcher from the Ethereum Foundation. Discussions revolved around the upcoming Pectra and Fusaka upgrades, with a clear consensus emerging that a faster cadence for protocol updates is preferable.
The Pectra upgrade, set to launch in April, aims to enhance the functionality of crypto wallets and improve the overall user experience. With up to 20 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) slated for inclusion, this upgrade could be the most significant in Ethereum’s history. Notable improvements in Pectra will entail doubling the data availability blob count from three to six and optimizing user interfaces. Beiko mentioned that the related system contracts would go live on the Ethereum mainnet on February 17.
Additionally, a deadline of April 10 has been established for finalizing the Fusaka upgrade, which includes various EIPs focused primarily on streamlining the transaction inclusion process. Developers have until March 13 to propose EIPs for Fusaka, and by March 27, community feedback will be solicited regarding which EIPs should be prioritized.
The push for accelerated development comes as pressure mounts from investors and advocates in the crypto space, urging Ethereum developers to enhance their release schedule in order to maintain a competitive edge as a leading layer one blockchain. The sentiment is that many impactful improvements can be efficiently implemented without compromising core values, encouraging developers to move swiftly and concurrently to address challenges, rather than getting mired in lengthy deliberations over priorities.
