Gold Prices in India Ease as Global and Currency Factors Weigh

Gold prices in India declined on Friday as international market moves and currency adjustments fed into local pricing. The metal was quoted at 12,505 rupees per gram, down from 12,566 rupees on Thursday. On a per-tola basis, the price eased to 145,853 rupees from 146,569 rupees a day earlier.

Local gold benchmarks are derived by translating global prices into Indian rupees and standard domestic units. Because the calculation depends on prevailing exchange rates and market conditions at the time of publication, actual retail prices may differ slightly across cities and dealers.

Gold continues to hold a central place in global financial markets because of its role as a store of value. Beyond its use in jewelry and ornamentation, the metal is closely watched as a safe-haven asset that often attracts demand when economic or political conditions become uncertain. It is also widely used as a hedge against inflation and against weakness in paper currencies, since its value does not depend on any single government or issuer.

Central banks remain the largest holders of gold, using the metal to diversify reserves and bolster confidence in their financial systems. In periods of market stress, higher gold holdings can help reinforce perceptions of stability and solvency. Official-sector buying has remained strong in recent years, with emerging-market central banks in particular continuing to expand their reserves.

Gold tends to move in the opposite direction of the US dollar and US Treasuries, both of which compete with bullion as safe-haven assets. A weaker dollar generally supports gold by making it cheaper for buyers using other currencies, while a stronger dollar often weighs on demand. The metal also tends to benefit when interest rates fall, since it does not generate yield and becomes more attractive relative to income-producing assets.

Broader market sentiment can also influence prices. Escalating geopolitical tensions, recession fears, or sharp declines in equities often drive investors toward gold, while stronger risk appetite can reduce its appeal.
