Biden Abandons Reelection Campaign, Endorses Harris
On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden abandoned his reelection bid amid increasing pressure from fellow Democrats and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to challenge Republican Donald Trump in the election in November.
Biden is the oldest person ever to have been the U.S. President at 81 and said he would stay in the presidency until the end of his term on January 20 next year.
Biden has been isolating at his home after last week testing positive for COVID-19.
Biden wrote on X that although he intended to seek reelection, he believed it was in the best interest of the country and his party for him to stand down and to only focus on fulfilling his duties as President for the rest of his term.
The move reshapes the White House contest dramatically that has been repeatedly shaken in the past month. Biden’s disastrous debate performance on June 27 resulted in his fellow Democrats urging him to drop out.
On July 13, there was an attempted assassination on former President Trump. Trump last week named hardline Republican U.S. Senator, J.D. Vanceto, as his running mate for vice president.
Americans had expressed widespread dissatisfaction in opinion polls with a potential Trump-Biden rematch. Trump told CNN Harris would be easier to beat than Biden.
