Biden Effective in Meetings – Yellen
On Tuesday, when asked whether she had seen any evidence of President Joe Biden declining mentally, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the president was very effective in meetings in which she was involved, including with international leaders.
Yellen did not say when she last met with Biden in person.
She said she wasn’t aware of discussions among cabinet secretaries on invoking the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which enables cabinet members and the vice president to declare the president not being able to discharge the duties and powers of the office and transfer the position to the vice president.
Republican Representative Mike Lawler asked Yellen whether she had seen any cognitive or mental decline in Biden, 81, given worries voiced after his debate against Republican Donald Trump on June 27, where he at times lost his train of thought.
Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty interrupted Lawler’s questions and moved to have Yellen’s testimony struck from the record since she wasn’t a physician. This prompted the chairman of the hearing, Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer, to stop further discussion of the issue.
Biden is facing criticism from several Democrats that he no longer has the mental acuity to be their nominee against Donald Trump in the presidential election on November 5.
