Tesla Omits Delivery Goal from Impact Report
On Thursday, Tesla’s latest impact report omitted its goal of delivering 20M vehicles per year by 2030, another indication the firm is trimming its auto ambitions as it moves its focus to robotaxis.
In 2020, CEO Elon Musk said that the EV maker aspired to sell 20M vehicles by the end of the decade – double the number sold by Toyota, the world’s biggest automaker.
Tesla has however changed tact recently as it dropped plans to produce a new model that would reportedly cost $25,000 while pushing autonomous driving technology as its main driver for growth. Tesla is planning to on August 8 hold a launch event for its robotaxi.
On Thursday, Musk said robotaxis and the company’s humanoid robot Optimus would be “profound” for Tesla.
Tesla’s strategy change implies it is planning on using current product lines for new affordable vehicles. This move would lead to smaller cost reductions than anticipated and slight volume growth.
A senior researcher at Leverage Shares, Sandeep Rao, said a healthy part of Tesla’s 2030 goal would have been the firm’s promise to introduce affordable cars at about $25,000.
He added that although Tesla currently promises to launch ‘more affordable’ models, that didn’t necessarily mean cars costing $25,000 would be rolled out.
